What's Wrong With This Picture? Valiantly Different in Canada

If you're an average Mopar enthusiast you may be wondering what the front of a Plymouth Valiant is doing on a 1963 Dodge Dart. Unlike urban legends about cars with front ends from one brand and rear ends from another of that automaker's brands that was being built on the same assembly line, and unlike custom car mashups, this was factory built and sold by authorized dealers.

If you were born after the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show you can be excused for not knowing this, but  Dodge Darts and Plymouth Valiants weren't always badge engineered twins. In 1963 they were more like bigger and smaller brothers, with an odd Canadian cousin in the family.

The Dart brand had previously been used by Dodge for both full size and intermediate cars but by the early 1960s compact cars were a growing segment of the market. AMC was selling record numbers of Ramblers, VW was on it's way to importing a half million Beetles a year, and GM and Ford were both introducing compact cars like the Pontiac Tempest, the Chevy II and the Falcon. When Plymouth dealers got the compact Valiant, Dodge dealers got a more luxurious version and it was decided to use the Lancer nameplate. For whatever reason, the 1961-62 Lancer didn't thrive, perhaps because it was just a badge engineered Valiant. Today it's hard to realize it, what with Hyundai Genesis trying to compete with Mercedes Benz, but in the late '50s and early '60s there were fairly rigid class distinctions between car brands. Ford, Chevrolet and Plymouth were not embarrassed to reference themselves as the "low priced three" and if you could afford to drive something more aspirational (though they didn't use that term back then) you didn't want your ride confused with an economy car. Alfred Sloan's business model reigned supreme, and not just at General Motors. For the 1963 model year, Dodge's compact was renamed the Dart and to distinguish it from the Valiant it was given a 5″ longer wheelbase, 111 inches, a different roofline and unique rear passenger windows. So an average Mopar fan would notice that this is a long wheelbase 1963 car with a Dart's sheet metal from the cowl back but it's wearing the front clip of a Valiant. Is it a Dodge or is it a Plymouth?

An average Mopar fan might notice the difference and scratch his head, but a serious Mopar fan, or one located in the Great White North, would know that actually it's not either a Dodge or a Plymouth, it's a "Valiant", made exclusively for the Canadian market and sold at both Chrysler-Plymouth and Dodge dealers in Canada. Chrysler had previously marketed the Valiant as it's own brand in Canada, so it could sell it through both Chrysler-Plymouth-Fargo and DeSoto-Dodge sales channels. It's not unusual for the American car companies to use slightly different branding in Canada. Beaumonts may look like Pontiacs and even carry the arrowhead logo, but you won't find the word Pontiac anywhere on those cars. There are Canadian Ford Monarchs that don't say Mercury anywhere on the cars. So this is a Valiant.

1963 Dodge Dart GT Convertible - Barrett Jackson Photo1963 Dodge Dart Convertible

With the Valiant brand established in Canada, it made sense to continue with that nameplate. They were already selling the identical car in both Canadian sales channels, so it didn't make sense to sell two different wheelbase variants. Since it was sold in Chrysler-Plymouth dealers the Valiant name was identified somewhat by Canadian consumers with Chrysler, an upscale brand. In the 1960s larger equated to more luxurious so using the  longer wheelbase car made sense. Using the longer wheelbase Dart necessarily meant using its rear end sheet metal. Swapping out front clips is a simple process, everything bolts on. Changing the rear end of a car's sheet meta, though,l means welding on different quarter panels and other panels plus labor to finish the seams. That's assuming the stock Valiant rear panels would mate up to the Dart midsection without modifications.  They might have had to stamp completely different rear "Valiant" panels for everything to go together properly.  The Dart wasn't being sold in Canada so why spend the money if nobody would notice the difference? The Canadian Valiant also had a Valiant instrument cluster, which was different from the Dart's, Valiant hubcaps, Valiant trim on the interior door panels, and seats embossed with the Valiant crest. On the rear deck lid, instead of a plastic insert inscribed with"Dodge GT", on the stainless steel panel between the backup lights there's a black plastic insert with "Signet" flanked by two Valiant crests.

Of course, making a unique model for Canadians, a relatively small market, costs more money than selling them a car identical to the American model, so the unique Canadian Valiant was fairly short lived. Also, in 1965, the United States and Canada signed the U.S.-Canada Automotive Trade Pact, a precursor to NAFTA, which was the death knell for unique Canadian variants of American cars. When the compact Mopars were restyled with the "fuselage" look for 1967, the wheelbases of Darts and Valiants were rationalized and Canadians got Valiants that were identical, save for no Plymouth logos, to what Americans were buying.

This 1963 Valiant Signet 200 was photographed at the 2012 Orphan Car Show, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It's owned by Terry and Marge Metcalf of Ontario. The Signet trim line was equivalent to a Dart GT in the States so this is as fancy as a Canadian Valiant got. If I understand the story correctly, Terry's family had one when he was a kid and he resolved to find one to own. After searching high and low across Canada and the US for one, his wife spotted this car parked in a driveway not far from their own home and they bought it and restored it. The restoration was easier than with some Canada only cars. With the exception of that trim on the back of the car, you can find parts – what isn't identical to a '63 Dart you can retrieve from a '63 American market Valiant.

Flaunted: Nissan DeltaWing at the 2012 Paris Motor Show

There's nothing quite like the anywhere else at the 2012 . Black with a nose that swoops to a narrow point, the dramatic lines part of a design that enables this race car to run with half the fuel of its competitors.

Nissan DeltaWing | 2012 Paris Motos Show | AutoMiddleEast.com

's DeltaWing proves that fast can be frugal. The car is back in France after competing at Le Mans earlier this year. As many of you will know, all went well for the DeltaWing for the first six hours of the 24 hour endurance race. The car not only startled everyone, but won hearts instantly for its innovative design. But then a disaster. A collision knocked the team out.

That wasn't the end of the Nissan DeltaWing story. The car will be heading to the Petit Le Mans in the United States to race again.

One of the things I was joking about was when I was asked what we 've done to avoid being crashed into again by one of the cars, I said, to be honest, I don't think anyone wants to be the second person to knock the DeltaWing out of a race because the first guys got such a bad rap for it." Ben Bowlby, designer of the Nissan DeltaWing

Once the fans have had the chance to see the Nissan DeltaWing in Paris it will be time for the next chapter in the DeltaWing story to begin. The circuit for the race in the United States is twistier, new challenges. But the hope is this time the car will get to the finish and continue to show that fuel efficiency has a place in motorsport.

Bentley Emirates inaugurates new facilities in UAE, showcases EXP 9 F Concept SUV

With the inauguration of a spanking new showroom in Abu Dhabi and world's biggest workshop in Dubai Industrial City, Emirates is further cementing its position in the UAE.

Bentley Emirates Abu Dhabi Showroom | AutoMiddleEast.com

Talking to AutoMiddleEast.com, Geoff Dowding, Regional Director for UK, Middle East and Asia at Bentley Motors confirmed that the UAE was only second to China in Bentley global sales tally.

2012 is shaping up to be the best year for Bentley in the Middle East in terms of sales of new cars, with 50% of total sales coming from UAE alone. The luxury car maker is experiencing high demands for its cars in the region resulting in a 100% year on year growth.

A new, gigantic 189,000 sq ft workshop – largest Bentley service facility in the world located at the Dubai Industrial City will enhance customer experience. Other than the Bentley factory, the new Bentley Emirates workshop is probably the only place in the world where one can see over a 100 Bentley cars under the same roof.

Bentley EXP 9 F Concept SUV at Bentley Emirates Abu Dhabi showroom | AutoMiddleEast.com

To mark this special occasion, Bentley showcased the EXP 9 F Concept SUV. A team of 80 skilled craftsmen took just 3 months to create a one off unit of the ultra high performance, ultra high luxury concept SUV to life from its clay models. Boldly handcrafted, the EXP 9 F Concept SUV features a W12 engine and redefines luxury in all areas. The futuristic interiors of this concept SUV are a step away from the conservative designs expected from a ultra luxury car maker such as Bentley.

Bentley claims that no decision on its production version has been made as yet. Considering the fact that the EXP 9 F is also being showcased to select existing Bentley owners and potential buyers from across the region, a decision is likely soon.

AutoMiddleEast.com has learnt that the real life version will see light of the day sometimes in 2016 and that 450 orders from the region have already been confirmed.

Mindy Kaling: Man Repeller & Proud Of It

101-003-MindyProject_101_7_509

Mindy Kaling loves her sequins, almost as much as we love her sparkling sense of humor. In her new Fox show, The Mindy Project, Kaling can be seen working as a gynecologist by day and flaunting some serious bling by night. However, in an interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” Kaling admitted that her vibrant wardrobe may not abide by the laws of attraction. “I have found it to be true that men tend to not understand or like sequins very much,” said Kaling. Wait, what?

This ongoing realization has been chronicled most famously by Leandra Medine a.k.a the Man Repeller. Although women may appreciate Medine and Kaling’s sense of style, some men may find it, ahem, slightly less attractive (we can’t even imagine what men thought of the green, balloon shorts Medine recently wore at NYFW, we dug them). In her interview, Kaling added a few other man-deterring items: “Men don’t like the wedge shoe, I have noticed. Men don’t like the statement necklace or chunky, tribal jewelry.” Well, there goes our entire fall wardrobe.

So, what’s a girl to do? Like Kaling, do we continue to “dress for other women”? Or, do we try to appeal to the minimalist male aesthetic?

Meet Ceramides: The Youth-Restoring Lipids Your Complexion Craves

Think you know your favorite beauty brands? Think again. In this continuing series, we highlight some of our go-to lines. Read on for some interesting tidbits, plus the rundown on the products that made our list of favorites.

We’re not too proud to admit it — sometimes we envy the young. Okay, we’re not exactly AARP-age over here, but our skin is starting to show its age — teeny lines around our mouths? We’ve got ‘em. Living-dead complexion after a late night out? You can bet we’re piling on the blush in the morning. It’s enough to make us wonder — what made our younger skin so soft, supple, and downright dewy? Turns out the skin geniuses at Elizabeth Arden have been asking the same question — and praise the beauty gods, they’ve found the answer.

Turns out young skin makes lipids called ceramides — moisture-magnet compounds that draw in and retain hydration (hence, the dewy skin of youth). As you age, your skin produces less of these little rejuvenators — but luckily Elizabeth Arden has a complete line of ceramide-containing cosmetics. That’s right, Elizabeth Arden’s signature vibrant cream blushes, volumizing mascaras, and luxe night creams now come with a youth-restoring boost. It’s enough to make us stop side-eyeing every fresh-cheeked young thing we see.

Click on to see our favorite ways to get gorgeous — and peel back the years while you’re at it!

Style Syllabus: What To Wear To 8 A.M. Classes

We are firm believers that you should always aspire to lead a life with no regrets. Still, wishing you could go back in time and right some of your wrongs is pretty unavoidable — especially when those “wrongs” force you to wake up in the wee hours of the morning three times a week. Yes, we’re talking about 8 a.m. classes.

After a night of staying up late to, um, “study,” the challenge of brushing your hair, putting on shoes, and changing out of your pajamas can seem akin to solving a continuous Cournot competition problem (oh wait — you have Game Theory at 8 a.m., too?). Still, even on those extra awful mornings, it’s important you come to class looking at least somewhat polished. After all — do you really want your professor remembering you as the hot mess who looked as if she just rolled out of bed at 7:55? Yeah, that’s what we thought.

Luckily, there are plenty of options out there that are equal parts comfy and presentable. From structured sweats to cozy tops and polished flats, these picks will make getting to class just a teeny-tiny bit easier. Now, grab a coffee, put down the XXL hoodie, and get to class. We’re serious. Put the hoodie down.

Lap Of Luxury: Exclusive Bottega Veneta Suite Calls The Park Hyatt Home

We recently did a story about designer home goods because, seriously, who wouldn’t want a Christian Lacroix French Frou Frou Limoncello Pillow? Now, another esteemed designer that entered the dwelling arena is Bottega Veneta. Known for its supple leather goods, the Italian brand is considered a leader in luxury. The same could be said for the Park Hyatt Chicago, so it’s no surprise that the two collaborated on a really suite upgrade.

Considering the fashion house opened up shop on the ground level of the hotel back in 2000, you could say this was a perfect union destined to happen. As part of a multimillion dollar hotel renovation, the Gold Coast hotel now has an exclusive Bottega Veneta-designed suite on the 17th floor. Measuring 1,400 square feet, the space is divided between a bedroom, open living room, kitchenette, and two bathrooms.

As you would expect, almost all of the furniture is from the Bottega Veneta collection. We’re talking everything from the chests of drawers and dining-room set to the bed, couch, and beyond. There’s even a brisée (18th-century-inspired chair) from the META line, produced in collaboration with Poltrona Frau. As for the name, this luxurious respite is appropriately called the Lake Suite Bottega Veneta, thanks to its to-die-for views of Lake Michigan.

Click through to take a peek without having to put up the $4,500 a night rate.

Hump, Marry, Kill: How Exactly Does One Get Marooned On An Island With Scott Speedman?

hmk

Hump: As if there was even a shadow of doubt as to which team to be on when it came to the whole Ben-Felicity-Noel love triangle (some of us still haven't let go of Felicity), allow me to present Scott Speedman: 2012 edition. Now starring on the new high-concept, lost-on-an-island series, Last Resort, it's like, "Scott Foley who?"

Marry: Ever seen a grown man cry over a doll? When it's Louis C.K. laboring over the piece of crap one he bought his daughter for Christmas in the midst of a clear existential "I'm going to be alone forever" downward spiral, it may be the funniest doll-repair moment in modern television. (And the competition is actually pretty fierce: Remember the Curb Your Enthusiasm doll haircut episode?)

The season finale of Louie was a series of ruminations on loneliness. There was the tale of Ping the duck, Fanny Chapcranter (best fictional news anchor name, ever) with her warning that there will be no one to "hold your body," death as the clock strikes 12 on New Year's Eve, and the saddest imagined conversation between his grown-up daughters a father could ever have.

Daughter 1: "All he does is sit in that big, old chair and eat Pinwheel cookies."
Daughter 2: "Why didn't he try harder to be less alone?"
Daughter 1: "He's so alone."

I have an inkling that Louis C.K. is trying to tell us about his biggest fear, you know? But listen up, ladies: This is a man who will portray his most vulnerable self on national television. Most people don't even let their guard down like that in the shower**. I have a feeling someone will come along to care for ol’ Louis in his golden years.

**Insider tip: Crying in the shower saves loads of time.

Kill: You know those actors who are always on the verge but never quite reach maximum exposure and potential? David Krumholtz is totally one of those people. Sure, you could argue that he had a successful stint on the CBS procedural Numb3rs (what's that? You didn't watch? No worries, neither did I. My mom was a huge fan, though.), and that he scored a pretty plum gig playing Will McAvoy's therapist on The Newsroom.

So, what's the problem? Despite the aforementioned success in dramas, Krumholtz is now the star of a sitcom. But like, look at him. Recognize that face? Yeah, he's Jake Johnson from New Girl's doppelganger. While Krumholtz may have appeared on the scene first, Johnson beat him to the sitcom lead spot — and on a much better show. And just like Hollywood doesn't actually have room for Josh Duhamel and Timothy Olyphant, we don't really need both these guys on sitcoms.

On Partners, Krumholtz plays the heterosexual half of a pair of lifetime bros based on the creators of Will & Grace. But timing, as they say, is everything. W&G broke television ground on the gay/straight BFF situation. Now, it's nothing new. If the entire premise of the show is that a gay man and a straight man are inseparable, codependent friends, they'd better be fully developed, meaty characters the audience can immediately latch on to.

This is not the case with Partners. Michael Urie is the overly flamboyant gay man who's forever meddling in straight dude Krumholtz's life. It's like Will & Grace — if Will & Grace focused on Jack and a random dude off the street. You know what's not a meaty sitcom role? "Random Dude Off The Street." That's pretty much how Krumholtz's character is written in the pilot. Also, he and Sophia Bush (who plays his fiancée) have about as much chemistry as two dinner plates.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be watching Jake Johnson use their face better on New Girl.

Fall Has Arrived, Which Means...Time To Start Predicting The Oscars!

oscarsmain

Summer is over. The Emmys have passed. Football season is starting. All of these things mean, of course, it’s time to start boning up on your Oscar’s predictions.

What? That’s worse than Christmas shopping before Halloween, you say? Nay, we disagree: The art of preparing for, predicting, and having adequate conversation about the Oscars should be finely honed, and it is never too soon to start thinking about who will take the golden man home. And besides, it’s fun.

So, instead of going the traditional “best actor/actress, yadda yadda” route, we’ve made the predictions based on the stuff we really want to know: Who might host? What would we like to see on the red carpet? Which ways will Woody Allen get out of not showing up again this year? Of course, the Oscars are nothing without dark horses, so share with us some surprising picks we might have overlooked. Go on. We dare you.

Since then she’s been “popping up” all over the city, showcasing women and men’s wares from a well-curated selection of local and hard-to-find designers. And there’s more: Everything is priced at up to 75% off. Pretty ingenious, no?

You’ve got two more days to shop deeply discounted fall goods from designers such as David Kahn Jeans, Inizio, MC Planet (super-cool French sportswear line), Lara Miller, Anna Hovet, C/Fan, Wendy Katlen, General Assembly, G1 Goods, Christopher Fisher, J Park, 88 Orange, and many more. We’ll see you there amongst the racks.

Where: 409 West Huron (at Sedgwick Street) no phone (it’s a pop-up shop!)

When: Friday, September 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

6 D.C. Dating Coaches Help You Find Your Soulmate — No, Really!

UPDATE: This story was originally published on August 24.
If there’s one thing we know about dating in D.C., it’s this: It ain’t easy. Even though we’ve earned a rep as one of the best cities in the country for singletons, that doesn’t make life (and love) any less complicated. Between dodging lame pickup lines, sifting through online profiles, agonizing over the perfect first-date outfit, and hunting for that elusive spark, finding real, lasting romance in the nation’s capital can feel like a full-time job.

So, if you’re not happy with your love life, it’s time to bring in the big guns. Enter, six of Washington’s savviest dating coaches, who’ve made careers out of helping singles hone their romancing skills. We picked their brains for answers to some of dating’s biggest FAQs — like “Why can’t I meet anyone decent?” — and were surprised by what we uncovered. Click through for the scoop on first-dates dos and don’ts, where to meet singles in Washington, and the best way to chat up that cutie across the bar. Okay, Cupid — let’s go!

erika

After writing her own perfect online profile and finding the love of her life on JDate, Erika Ettin turned her talent for writing dating profiles into a business. As the founder of A Little Nudge, the D.C.-based dating coach guides her clients through online dating, helping them post profiles and photos that result in real-life dates. A Little Nudge’s services also include hand-picked matches, tips on date planning, and relationship advice.

Where are the best places for singles to hang out in D.C.?
“Take a Groupon cooking class, join a kickball or bocce ball league (which are both huge in D.C.), or find a group that does something else of interest to you. While not everyone in these groups may be single, these are all great ways to meet new people. And you never know — they may have friends for you to meet.  There’s also singles events, such as speed dating. A few options in the area are Professionals in the City and HurryDate. And the third option is online dating — my forte. This is where you'll find the largest number of singles, especially those who you may not cross in your regular social circles.”

How should you dress for a first date?
“It's important to put yourself together nicely. Some first dates are right after work (a happy hour drink), so that's easy — just go in your work clothes. But some aren't. I always have to laugh because on my first date with my boyfriend, I wore a very heavy sweater dress because I had actually made plans afterwards to go to this après-ski party in case he was a dud.  (Luckily, he wasn't, and I ditched the party.) But that was not a good first date outfit, since it didn't show my shape at all, and we still joke about it.

For women, if you're coming from work, a nice business-casual outfit works well. Try not to look too ‘business’ and no fun — a nice pair of pants or skirt and a top that shows off your shape but isn't too revealing works well. Other than that, just go with your style. Check your teeth, make sure there are no stains on your shirt, and you're good to go.”

Any first-date (and general dating) dos and don’ts?
“Do: Go in with an open mind. Meet for just drinks or coffee, especially if it's a first online date. You can always add dinner, but you can’t take it back. Smile — it goes a long way. Ask questions.

Don't: Have your phone out on the table. Talk about yourself the entire time. Be rude to the server. Drink too much.”

Let’s say you’ve met your match. When do you take your online dating profile down?
“I'm a firm believer in e-mailing and dating many different people initially to see who's out there. But at some point, when you think you've found the right person, it might be time to scale back on your online dating life and start to enjoy your offline dating life. But remember, don't log into the online dating site immediately after a date. Even if you didn't like your date, try to show some respect by not logging in until the next day. When things start to get serious with someone — even before you've discussed your relationship status — it's a good idea to minimize your online dating to give the relationship a chance to bloom. And finally, when you're ready to be exclusive with someone, the only surefire way to make sure you're both on the same page is to openly discuss taking your profile down. Heck, you could even have a ‘profile deletion party’ with a glass of wine in hand. That actually sounds like a pretty fun date!”

Alicia Silverstone Stars In Butter (Yes, She's Still Vegan)

alicia-silverstone

Let’s be clear: Alicia Silverstone just stars in a movie called Butter, she wasn’t actually spreading it on a piece of toast. Hosted by The Cinema Society, DKNY, Forevermark, and Rent The Runway, the film, a political satire comedy revolving around butter-sculpting contests (in case you didn’t know, it’s like a HUGE thing in the U.S.), premiered last night with its impressive cast in tow, including Olivia Wilde, Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, and Ashley Greene.

However, our focus was on Silverstone, dressed in a (um, buttery?) creme-colored, tiered frock — though, it wasn’t because of our feelings toward Clueless or because we think she’ll make an awesome vampire. It was because we couldn’t help but wonder what a vegan would possibly do in a butter-sculpting competition. Is it okay to play with your food if you don’t actually intend to eat it? Naturally, we asked The Kind Life author what her alternative would be in the highly competitive world of butter sculpting. “Earth Balance Butter!,” she informed us.

Trust us, we never doubted her opposition to dairy, and as co-star Wilde filled us in, no butter was actually used in Butter — rather, butter wax. Aha, mystery solved.
Ready to see Silverstone act in the ironically named movie? Butter is currently available On Demand and at iTunes, and will be in theaters October 5. For a few instant laughs, check out the trailer, here.

It’s Official: Anne Hathaway Gets Dirty Married In Valentino, Comes Up With Aww-Inducing Solution

FFN_Hathaway_Shulman_Wed_PremiereFF_092912_50901997

Well, we told you we’d keep you posted, didn’t we? As promised, Anne Hathaway got married this weekend and we’ve scored pics of her ravishing Valentino gown. Of course, no dress worthy of a fairytale Big Sur wedding is complete without a headpiece. If Anne was worried about missing her long hair on the big day, well, that veil and headband combo more than made up for it.

The star chopped off all her hair for the Les Misérables movie, but that super-short pixie cut is a far cry from Fantine’s desperation in real life. A lot of women probably imagine long flowing locks pinned into a meticulously braided updo (not that there’s anything wrong with that) underneath a sheer veil, but Anne just proved that short hair on your wedding day can be just as beautiful. Congrats! It looks like a beautiful wedding, although we did notice one thing…click through to the next page to see what we’re talking about.

Kenzo Goes Wild And Wonderful For Spring '13

Kenzo has secured itself on our list as one of our favorite fashion come-back stories to date, and today’s Paris Fashion Week presentation was only further evidence of Humberto Leon and Carol Lim’s continued success. Playing up familiar silhouettes and graphics (yes, those amazing jungle cats are back), the spring ’13 collection was consistently exciting, look by look.

As if taking us on an imaginary ride into the wild, the collection featured safari jackets, utilitarian details, and muted, neutral shades of forest green and sandy beige. But, as expected, it was Kenzo’s unbeatable prints that stole the show. Leon and Lim have completely re-envisioned the animal print — their version is unexpected, brilliantly colorful, and irresistibly charming, all at once. We were also delighted by the exotic florals and botanical prints that appeared on collared dresses, flowing onesies, silky suit-and-jacket combos, and chic collarless coats.

Completing the looks, the models slipped their hands into sturdy-handled clutches (love!), sported rounded shades of blue and brown, and were adorned with custom jewelry by Delfina Delettrez. And, closing the show with the complete line of ladies posed behind a scrim and projected with images of flowers and trees, a familiar tune comes to mind. Kenzo, you wild thing, you really make our hearts sing.

Cinderella Story: Sunnie Brook Shows One Lucky Reader How To Get Glam

We may be cynical modern girls, but nonetheless…what’s better than a fairy-tale-worthy makeover? Not much, we say…and apparently makeup artist/hairstylist/blogger/awesome human being Sunnie Brook feels the same way.

When one of her readers, Cassandra, reached out to the pro asking if she could give her a makeover in honor of her birthday, Sunnie went all out to make this mother of two feel like a total princess. She provided the hair, makeup, and fashion styling for a two-part transformation: a surfer-chic day look followed by a bohemian-glam evening ensemble.

We love this concept (and the awesome video that captures it, courtesy of director and food blogger Claire Thomas) for many reasons. First, it’s always awesome to see women inspiring other women and supporting each other (and what better way to bond with your fellow ladies than with beauty products?), and second, we just love ourselves a good before-and-after!

Although Cassandra is gorgeous with no makeup and unstyled hair, seeing the step-by-step process that Sunnie and her team used to take Cassandra from fresh-faced beauty to L.A. glamazon is super-inspiring. From the simple bronzed eye makeup for day to that AWESOME evening updo (ever wonder how celebs get those pretty woven chignons? Apparently it’s as simple as two twists and two knots: easy peasy!), this tutorial is chock-full of tips that are easy to replicate for your next day or evening date. Check out the video for an exact breakdown of how Sunnie gave lucky Cassandra her double makeover.
